Cesc Fabregas has hailed Sadio Mane as a "top three" player in world football during his stellar display for Liverpool against Red Bull Salzburg.

Mane scored Liverpool's opening goal in their 4-3 Champions League victory over RB Salzburg and his status as a world-class player was the subject of debate on Twitter.

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Fabregas reacted to Mane's superb showing by indirectly comparing him to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He Tweeted: "Mane for me is top three players in the world and has been for a while. Top top level."

His post about the Senegalese attacker immediately went viral with fans weighing in on the Spaniard's comment.

"Oooof big statement from Cesc," one Twitter user wrote.

A second Tweeted: "You really think Mane is better than Neymar? Come on Cesc."

A third Tweeted: "Cesc this is a really rare L from you I'm afraid." To which Fabregas replied by saying: "Believe me he's amazing. I'd love to play behind him."

Mane performed heroically for Liverpool last season, chipping in with 26 goals in all competitions and he has continued his goal scoring ways this campaign.

He already has seven goals to his name and is arguably Jurgen Klopp's main man in attack.

Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch also heaped praise on Mane.

"He has come on amazingly well, he is scoring goals there and was top scorer in the Premier League last year right up there with Salah," he said on BT Sport.

"I don't care what he says, there is definitely healthy competition between him and Salah for goals now.

"I just think he has improved his all-round game. He is obviously incredibly fast, strong and pacey but sometimes he was a little wasteful. He is different class now."

Michael Owen believes Mane could get into any team in world football.

"I think he would. His finishing has certainly improved, he has become more consistent over recent seasons," he said.

"I think he is a typical Jurgen Klopp player in that Jurgen Klopp improves players. It is just standard in the team, you look right across the team, he gets people playing for him and he makes people better and there's no question that his level at the moment is as high as it's ever been."
