Cristiano Ronaldo was denied his first goal of the new season after VAR ruled him offside by the smallest of margins.

Juventus took a 1-0 lead against Parma through club captain Giorgio Chiellini in the 21st minute.

And Ronaldo thought he had opened his account for the season when he smashed a powerful low shot past Luigi Sepe in the 33rd minute.

The Juventus superstar, 34, was swamped by his teammates as he celebrated his goal.

But then VAR was called into action and ruled that Ronaldo had received the ball in an offside position.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star will be hoping to build on his success in Italy in the new season.

Ronaldo made 43 appearances across all competitions last season and scored an impressive 28 times, along with registering ten assists to his name.

The Portugal captain helped the Old Lady capture the Serie A title and Italian Super Cup last season.

However, Ronaldo recently admitted that he could retire from football as early as next year.

While he might have dropped a hint about when he could leave football, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said that his move to Juventus wasn't motivated by money.

He told Portuguese channel TVI: "I do not need football to live well, I am fine financially.

"I crave intriguing projects and the Juventus one was just that.

"I have always liked this team, which is the best in Italy and among the best in the world.

"After winning in England and Spain, I have done the same here, too.

"Leaving Real Madrid was not easy, I lived there for nine years, 60 per cent of my career.

"But I wanted a different challenge and I happy to be here now."

Juventus secured a 1-0 away victory against Parma in the start of their title defence.

Will Juventus retain the Serie A title this season?
