Chelsea fans were fuming after their side were denied a penalty following Harry Maguire's 'headlock' on Cesar Azpilicueta.

Manchester United captain Maguire pulled down Azpilicueta inside the box, but Martin Atkinson failed to award a penalty during Saturday's Premier League clash.

Replays showed the England defender dragging the Spaniard to the ground.

Though match referee Atkinson was unmoved and VAR was not used on this occasion to the dismay of Chelsea supporters.

One social media user wrote: "What ?! Headlocks are a new tackle ? Get real - penalty."

A second tweeted: "Giving penalties for far far less in their favour and obvious ones not given against them. Absolute cheats."

A third added: "Ridiculous, he knows exactly what he is doing and it's cheating. If he did this for England I'd be absolutely livid just defend properly. He's a strong guy, get in the correct position and he will naturally win the ball with his strength..."

Sky Sports pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes the visitors should have been awarded a penalty in the first half.

"It's 100% (a penalty) because what is Maguire doing?" He said.

"If you see it Maguire is just strangling Cesar Azpilicueta! He stops him from jumping, he's putting his weight on his shoulders."

Patrice Evra added: "I used to watch wrestling and even Hulk Hogan would do this kind of move.

"This is a clear penalty that's why VAR, again we can talk all day about that but this is a clear penalty to Chelsea."

United and Chelsea eventually played out a goalless draw.
