According to Bobby Madley, the Bolton and Bury clash at Old Trafford could have all of the proceeds going to "unpaid players and staff."

Ex-Premier League referee Bobby Madley has called for Manchester United to host the upcoming clash between Bolton and Bury at Old Trafford.

Bury learned on Tuesday that they had been expelled from the English Football League after their late takeover bid by C&N Sporting Risk collapsed.

And financially struggling Bolton have been handed 14 days to find a new buyer or acquire the funds needed this season to avoid the same fate handed down to Bury.

Madley took to Twitter to call for Bolton and Bury's League One match to move ahead on 8th September at United's stadium.

The 33-year-old tweeted: "Bolton due to play Bury in a couple of weeks.

"If both teams go out this week perhaps that game should still go ahead at Old Trafford.

"All proceeds to unpaid players and staff. Sell the place out with football fans of every club and stand together."

And the referee, who now officiates in Norway, has attracted a fair bit of support for his idea from fans.

Twitter user Tom Harding responded to the tweet: "Great idea, but surely having it at the Reebok or Gigg Lane would be better (or both)?"

IJ Taylor wrote: "Great idea. Hopefully would help those who lose their jobs. As an itfc supporter I feel for any fellow fan who stands to lose their club."

A third said: "As an LFC fan who lived in Bury for 20+ years I would whole heartedly support this."

And user Jamie added: "What a terrific idea. Every member of the footballing family (and we are a family) should support this if the worst happens. Good luck to all our fellow football fans, we all hope this gets sorted for both clubs. Remember everyone, this could be our club."

Bury owner Steve Dale has been branded a 'disgrace' for comments he made in an interview that recently went viral.

Agree or disagree with Madley's idea?
