Anthony Martial has been branded as "bang average" and most Manchester United fans would not spill any tears over his potential departure from Old Trafford.

That is according to The Sun reporter Neil Custis, who brutally slammed the 25-year-old French forward's career at United.

Martial arrived at Old Trafford under former United boss Louis van Gaal in 2015 as part of an initial £36m deal from Monaco, which could rise to £58m through add-ons.

The United star has made 258 appearances for the Red Devils and scored 78 times and registered 50 assists.

However, Martial has been heavily criticised over his consistency in a United shirt and his goalscoring ability in the final third.

The France international missed the end of United's season after a ruptured knee ligament injury he suffered on international duty in March.

Custis has now claimed that Martial appears "disinterested when he's on the pitch sometimes" and he is "bang average at this level."

He told talkSPORT: "Martial could go tomorrow and I don't think there would be many tears spilt amongst Man United fans.

"He's bang average. I don't know who is going to want to take him on.

"I watch United all the time and he is. I've never seen a player looked so disinterested when he's on the pitch sometimes.

"Doesn't make the runs, doesn't get in positions to score. He's had one good season. He is bang average at this level."

Martial, whose current deal expires in 2024, is expected to stay at United for the new Premier League season.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is an admirer of the former Monaco star and sees him as part of his long-term plans, despite criticisms over Martial's consistency.

The Red Devils are expected to reinforce in the summer transfer window and have already agreed a whopping £73m deal for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

Sancho, 21, arrived at United's Carrington training complex on Tuesday for his medical ahead of completing his sensational move to Old Trafford.
