Back in October 2016, the extremely talented Angel Gomes alerted Barcelona scouts after a number of impressive performances for club and country.

Seven months later he would become the youngest player since the 1960s to make his Old Trafford debut.

Fast forward another nine months and the 17-year-old has received arguably the best news of his young career to date - a place in Manchester United's Champions League squad following their 0-0 draw against Sevilla on Wednesday night.

Since making his debut against Crystal Palace at the end of last season, Gomes has featured numerous times on the substitutes bench, most recently against Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup.

Now it seems Mourinho has warmed to his name in match day squads following his inclusion this afternoon.

Gomes is also joined in the Champions League squad by fellow U19 teammate Ethan Hamilton, who was also named on the bench for their tie against Huddersfield.

Gomes has football running through his veins. He is the cousin of former Manchester United winger Nani and his father Gil was an Angolan-born former Portugal Under-21 striker who played alongside the likes of Luis Figo and Rui Costa.

Unlike a large proportion of players in his age group, the 17-year-old has the ability to find the right pass. He knows when to shoot and when to find a man. This attribute, combined with incredible pace and skill, means that he can and will become a phenomenal number 10 in the coming years.

In fact, he and Tahith Chong are tipped for great things at Old Trafford.

Many people asked whether Gomes would leave Manchester United following links with Barcelona, but in an exclusive interview with SPORTbible last year, we can officially confirm that he wants to stay at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future:

"In five years time, I would like to be playing professionally for Manchester United. Winning titles is huge for me. I want to play international football, play in World Cups and European Championships. I want to be the best player at my age level." he said.

"I set myself high standards and try to push myself to play at the highest level."

We look forward to tracking his progress in the coming years.
