Raphael Varane apologised to his Real Madrid teammates during his post-match interview after his costly mistakes against Manchester City.

Real Madrid were eliminated from the Champions League following City's 4-2 aggregate victory on Friday.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus secured a 2-1 win at the Etihad to knock out the Spanish champions.

Varane, who's considered one of the best defenders in world football, was at fault for both goals and he owned up after his errors.

The Frenchman gave an incredibly honest post-match interview following his side's defeat to City.

"I wanted to show my face. I got it wrong, this is on me, and we are out," he said.

"I am sorry for my teammates. I am sad that we are out. This has not happened many times in my career."

He added: "Now we must show character, because it has been a hard night."

The Premier League outfit opened the scoring in the eighth minute after Varane lost possession to Jesus who set up Sterling.

Karim Benzema pulled one back but in the 68th minute, Varane produced another disastrous moment as he failed to deal with a ball over the top. He fluffed two opportunities to clear the ball with Jesus taking advantage to score.

The Blues face Lyon in the quarter-finals with Real Madrid's 2019/20 season officially in the books.
