Rafa Benitez is looking to bring plenty of new blood in at Newcastle as he looks to assemble a squad capable of remaining in the top flight for another season, and not suffer immediate relegation back down to the second tier.

Though the Mapgies did end up finishing as Championship winners, it's evident that the club need to spend a decent sum of money in order to strengthen for next term - after all the Premier League is a completely different kettle of fish.

Newcastle have been linked with a whole host of players so far, but only Christian Atsu, who spent last season on loan at St. James' Park, has put pen to paper.

One name who is being heavily linked with making the move to the North-East is Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva.

Lucas was signed by Benitez from Gremio back in 2007, and Scott Wilson from the Northern Echo reports that the Spaniard wants to link up with the 30-year old once again.

A return to Gremio for Lucas has been mooted, but it's noted that wages could be a stumbling block and so remaining in England with Newcastle is more likely.

Lucas, a good servant to Liverpool over the years, made a total of 31 appearances last term, but only has a year remaining on his current contract and is not a long-term option for Jurgen Klopp.

The report says that Benitez, who is believed to have held talks with managing director Lee Charnley in regards to transfer plans, wants to sign two midfielders - with the experienced Lucas in his sights.

Jack Colback or Isaac Hayden were the midfield options alongside Jonjo Shelvey last season, but a more seasoned optioned may be required next season and Lucas, who could be available for £4 million, would appear to be a decent option.

Newcastle fans, would you welcome the arrival of Lucas?
