Four years ago England were embarrassing themselves at Euro 2012 losing on penalties to Italy whilst barely looking like they wanted to play football. Four years later and England were back at the embarrassment on a whole new level but for their victors as lot has changed in four years.

Iceland are without doubt the story of the tournament. Having never qualified for a major championships before and having a population the size of Coventry they weren't exactly expected to pull up any trees but their excellent win over England put them into the quarterfinals of Euro 2016 to face hosts France in Paris.

So whilst England, with the likes of Manchester United's Wayne Rooney and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, were crashing out of another major tournament life was very difference for the Icelandic players.

Here's where they were in 2012:

Hannes Halldorsson- Four years ago Halldorsson quite his job as film director, where he directed the video for the 2012 Icelandic entry into Eurovision. The goalkeeper was playing for KR Reykjavik before joining Norwegian side Brann on loan.

Birkir Saevarrson- Defender Birkir was also with Brann back in 2012 where he stayed till 2014 before leaving for Hammarby.

Ragnar Sigurðsson- Was playing for Copenhagen as they lost the Danish title to FC Nordsjælland on the last game of the season.

Kari Arnason- As the Euros of 2012 finished Arnason was leaving Aberdeen to join Rotherham.

Ari Skúlason- Was playing for Swedish side GIF Sundsvall.

Johan Gudmundsson- Qualified for the Europa League with AZ Alkmaar.

Birkir Bjarnason- He signed for newly promoted Serie A side Pescara but more importantly scored his first international goal against France.

Gylfi Sigurðsson- The best known of the Iceland players was moving from Swansea to Tottenham in the summer of 2012, before moving back.

Aron Gunnarsson- Missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing the play-off final to Cardiff City.

Kolbeinn Sigþórsson- The match winner won the first of his three Dutch titles with Ajax in 2012.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson- Was relegated from the Icelandic Premier League in 2012 dropping down to the 2nd tier before his move to Viking.

Ögmundur Kristinsson- Playing for Fram.

Ingvar Jonsson- Goalkeeper for Stjarnan.

Hordur Magnusson- Became the first Icelandic player to sign for Juventus.

Sverrir Ingi Ingason- Made his professional debut for Breiðablik UBK in 2012.

Haukur Hauksson - Won the Icelandic cup with KR Reykjavik.

Hjörtur hermannsson- Moved from the Icelandic league to join PSV in the Netherlands.

Elmar Bjarnason- Won promotion to the Danish Superliga with Randers.

Emil Halfredsson- Failed to win promotion to Serie A with Verona, losing in the play-offs.

Arnor Traustason- Was on loan with Norwegian side Sandnes Ulf.

Runar Sigurjonsson- Played in Iceland for Valur, making his international debut later that year.

Eidur Gudjohnsen- The former Barcelona forward finished a frustrating season with AEK Athens where he was injured from October till the end of the season and was released.

Alfred Finnbogason- Scored 12 goals in 17 games for Helsingborg and earned himself a move to Dutch side Heerenveen.
