Who's the best defender in the world football? Well, Aymeric Laporte has weighed in.

The Frenchman is quickly becoming an important player in Pep Guardiola's set-up.

He's featured in every single Premier League game this season, since signing from Athletic Bilbao in January 2018 for a reported £57 million.

Laporte has also pinpointed Ramos as the bench mark for defenders.

"Sergio Ramos is probably the best centre-back in the world at the moment as we know we have to match his standards or better him if we are to be as good as he is," he added.

"To get to the top, you must have an edge to your game, like Ramos does."

Ramos, 32, remains at the top of his game and still widely considered as one of the best - if not the best defender in the world.

The Real Madrid captain was even voted best defender in world football.

SPORTbible ran a poll on Twitter that asked users to pick from four of the best defenders in the world: Ramos, his club colleague Raphael Varane, Atlético Madrid's Diego Godín and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

After 16,767 Twitter users participated, the Spaniard came out on top with 34 per cent of the votes.

However, he only nudged out van Dijk by one per cent of the vote, who ended up coming second with 33 per cent share of the vote.

Varane, who won the World Cup in the summer with the French national team, came in third place with 19 per cent of the vote. Meanwhile, Godín received only 14 per cent of the votes and came in at fourth place.
