Premier League Winter Break Confirmed, Starting From 2019/20 Season

Big news.

There have been discussions for a while but it's now been officially confirmed that the Premier League will introduce a winter break starting from the 2019/20 season.

Other top leagues such as the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga have had rests mid-season for a number of years and now for the first time ever, the English top flight will follow suit.

The move, which has been partly done in the hope of giving England a better chance of success at major tournaments, will see a 10-day break from action at the start of February. FA Cup fifth round ties will also be moved to midweek, while replays at that stage have been scrapped completely to accommodate the change.

All-importantly, the exciting Christmas and New Year period where games come thick and fast over these shores, will remain exactly the same.

Commenting on the news, as per The Guardian, FA chief executive Martin Glenn said:

"It has been talked about for years and there has not been the climate of collaboration there is now,.

"It needed a strong FA to get it through, an FA that was financially in a better place and confident of its future revenue streams.

"I think you will see England players better rested for Euro 2020 and hopefully we will see that in their performance and continued improvement in the Champions League performance by English clubs."

Are you in favour of the winter break? Is it the right call?

Sound off in the comments.
