It would be fair to say that Jozy Altidore did not have a successful time in English football.

The striker had a loan spell at Hull City in the 2009/10 season where he scored just one goal.

His record at AZ Alkmaar was actually very impressive and that led to him returning to England in 2013, this time permanently with Sunderland.

However, Altidore scored just one goal for the club in 42 Premier League appearances and ended up returning to the MLS when he was sold to Toronto FC in January 2015.

And Sunderland fans will be stunned to find out that Altidore is on a massive salary in the MLS.

The salaries of those playing in the top tier of football in the United States and Canada has been revealed by the MLS Players Union website.

And according to the data, Altidore's annual base salary for 2017 has reportedly seen him rake in an astonishing $4.875 million.

That means that only Michael Bradley, Sebastian Giovinco, Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, Bastian Schweinsteiger and David Villa are above him when it comes to weekly wage.

He never got going at all in the Premier League, but Altidore isn't doing too badly in the MLS, particularly when it comes to his salary.

Sunderland fans will be perplexed as to how a player who never really did anything of note for them is earning around $93,000 a week as a designated player in the MLS.

Considering the likes of Villa, Kaka, Pirlo and Schweinsteiger are all some of the biggest names in football and have World Cup winners medals, it's quite remarkable to think of the money Altidore is on.

It just goes to show, even if you don't make it in the cash-rich Premier League, someone, somewhere will have no issue paying you big money.

Altidore has scored three goals in seven MLS appearances so far this season.
