Belgium midfielder Mousa Demebele has so far played in the Premier League for two different teams; Fulham and his current employers Tottenham.

Dembele is considered to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and is a key part of Mauricio Pochettino's side, playing as a holding midfielder who has the capacity to build attacks and link the play.

But Liverpool are said to have turned down the chance to sign the 29-year old a few years back, because "his stats were poor".

That's according to former Reds midfielder Gary Gillespie, who shared a a conversation with a former Liverpool manager in which he was not keen on signing the former AZ Alkmaar.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, the 56-year old said:

"I had a conversation with an ex-Liverpool manager, and talking about Dembele I said 'why don't you go and sign him?

"He said 'his stats are poor, he doesn't create enough goals, doesn't score enough goals', hence the reason probably why Tottenham have moved him back in the holding midfield role, where it's not essential to score goals or create goals.

"I've watched him, and technically he's probably one of the most gifted midfield players in the country at this moment in time, but as you rightly say he doesn't score enough goals."

Do stats always tell the story? Would Dembele get into Jurgen Klopp's table-topping Liverpool side at present?
