Liverpool's refusal to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona has left the Brazilian devastated to the point of tears, according to reports.

Coutinho was a summer target of the Camp Nou club, who had identified the 25-year-old as long term successor to Andres Iniesta. However, Liverpool were not interested in entertaining any offers for their star playmaker, leaving Barcelona frustrated and Coutinho heartbroken.

According to Mundo Deportivo,Coutinho was seen crying after realising he wouldn't be trading Merseyside for Catalonia this summer, having been desperate to leave Anfield throughout the transfer window.

The Brazilian has not played for Liverpool this season and had told the club's management that he no longer wished to play for the club and wanted to instead play with the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Liverpool, however, were not interested in Coutinho's desire to move to the La Liga giants and rejected all of Barcelona's advances, including offers believed to be in the region of £150 million.

Coutinho's absence from Jurgen Klopp's first few squads of the new season doesn't seem to have had any adverse affects on the Reds' performances, with Liverpool safely qualifying for the Champions League via a two legged victory over Hoffenheim and taking seven points from their first three Premier League games, including last Sunday's 4-0 mauling of Arsenal, at Anfield.

The former Internazionale youngster may have a hard time getting back into Jurgen Klopp's first XI, with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and new signing Mohamed Salah linking up to devastating affect already, this term.
