Screenshots of Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale's game-faces have got fans seriously excited for the launch of PES 2022.

Konami are preparing for life on next-generation consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and have changed to a new 'Unreal Engine'.

And early images of the detailed graphics, created by an independent artist using the all-new engine, look very promising.

The below images of Messi and Bale genuinely look like real-life pictures of the pair.

The duo's facial features have been captured perfectly, with hair, beard and ears all on all point and a huge buzz has been created on social media.

However, the consensus is that Messi's likeness is much closer than Bale's appearance - particularly going off the front image.

PES 2021 marked the 25th anniversary of the Pro Evolution Soccer games by releasing a season update at a discounted price instead of a brand new game.

With the 'Unreal Engine', Konami are promising "more realistic player models and animations, enhanced physics, photorealistic visuals".

They released a teaser trailer starring Messi back in July 2020, featuring close ups of his face and Adidas Nemeziz boots.

More recently, Konami made a surprise limited test version demo of the next PES available to download so gamers could get a feel for the new game.

The Japanese gaming giant have secured exclusive deals with Atalanta and Napoli, while also confirming the legendary Kazuyoshi Miura will be "immortalised" in the PES franchise.
