Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes it would make "no sense" for Jadon Sancho to leave Borussia Dortmund and return to the Etihad.

Sancho, 20, came through the City youth academy before leaving the club and signing for Dortmund in 2017.

And the England international quickly established himself as a regular in the Dortmund XI and has become one of Europe's most sought-after stars.

Speaking ahead of City's clash with Liverpool on Thursday evening, Guardiola hit out at the idea that the club could try to sign Sancho this summer.

The 49-year-old Spaniard said: "He [Sancho] decided to leave, why should he decide to come back?

"When he decided to move to Dortmund, it is not because he is going to decide to come back two years later. It would make no sense.

"He didn't want to be here so that is why he doesn't want to come back here."

Sancho has been heavily linked with a big-money move to City rivals Manchester United this summer.

However, Sky Sports recently reported that the Red Devils won't splash out more than £50m for the English winger.

United, who remain in the hunt for a top-four finish, swept aside Brighton in an emphatic 3-0 win on Tuesday night.

And Jamie Redknapp after the match urged the Red Devils to sign the £100m-rated Sancho, who has two years remaining on his current deal.

The Sky Sports pundit said: "This [Manchester United] team could do some real damage. They've got so much quality and pace.

"If they add Jadon Sancho as well, they will be even better.

"Brighton were poor tonight, really poor. But Manchester United punished them. They started the match so well and never let off."

Guardiola's men will face Liverpool, who captured the Premier League title last week, at 8:15pm UK time.
