Dimitar Berbatov has claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has found Manchester United's next Cristiano Ronaldo in Red Devils starlet Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood, 18, made his senior debut for United last season before making a breakthrough into the first team in the current campaign.

The England U21 international was handed a start in United's 3-0 win over Brighton on Tuesday and opened the scoring in style in the 16th minute.

And Greenwood also bagged himself an assist when he set up the in-form Bruno Fernandes with a superb chipped pass.

Former United striker Berbatov wasted no time in drawing a comparison between Greenwood and Ronaldo after his performance against Brighton.

The 39-year-old Bulgarian told The Daily Mirror: "Greenwood, against Brighton, was like Ronaldo.

"His left foot is unbelievable along with his vision, I don't think many signings are needed to take United to that next level.

"They need to be really classy players to make the difference, someone who is going to be better than the current squad of players."

Greenwood, whose contract expires in 2023, has made 42 appearances across all competitions and scored 15 times and registered five assists.

Solskjaer showered the United starlet with praise after his performance helped secure all three points at the Amex.

The United boss said: "He's getting better. You can see clearly that he's maturing and improving, he's only 18 still so we will see more from him.

"I've said it throughout the year that as long as we can get him faced up in and around the box he'll create chances for us but in this game, his hold-up play and his link-up play and general movement was fantastic as well.

"It's great when he can go inside and outside, both to his left and right.

"He's a special talent, a special kid that we are going to look after, try to develop into a top, top player.

"He's doing well now but he is still young and has things to learn. He knows that but we have a special talent there we have to nurture."

United are two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and three behind Leicester City in their pursuit for a Champions League place.

The Red Devils return to action on Saturday when they host Bournemouth for a 3 pm UK kick-off.
