Kante, who has to be in the running for the coveted Ballon d'Or, played down the thought of winning the prestigious prize in a humble post-match interview following his colossal Champions League final outing.

He told RMC Sport: "It's amazing. It's the result of a lot of effort, after a lot of difficulties during the season.

"The Man of the Match award is secondary. The main thing is the work of the whole group.

"It is pride and joy. We fought to qualify for the final. Today, we have suffered, we have the reward."

Asked about his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or, he replied: "No, for the moment we are savouring the Champions League, the Euros are soon, I will join the France team and I hope to win that as well."

Before Saturday's showpiece, former Chelsea hero Ramires said that Kante would be a deserving winner if he won the Champions League and Euro 2020.

"I watch Kante play and there's a movie in my head because I see myself. He plays, he's got a highlight reel, but no one sees him wanting to show up off the field," he said.

"He's very calm, always quiet. He's an extraordinary player. He's in every corner of the field.

"In defence, in the middle, in attack, on the sides. He's among the best in the world. The way he's playing is impressive.

"He may turn out to be one of the top three in the world.

"But it's hard for a defensive midfielder to come in and win a Ballon d'Or. It would be deserved, yes [if he won the Champions League and Euro 2020]."
