In news that will come as a disappointment to those of you (including me) who really wanted Vince McMahon to buy Newcastle United, it appears an offer from someone who isn't the owner of WWE has been tabled for the Magpies, this evening.

McMahon was rumoured to be interested in buying the St. James' Park club some years ago but now it appears financier Amanda Staveley is in the driving seat to become the new owner of the Magpies, having made an offer of £300 million to buy the club.

Sky Sports are reporting that Ms Staveley's PCP Capital Partners made the bid over the weekend, although there is no word as of yet as to whether the bid has been accepted or if there are any other interested parties readying a rival bid of their own.

Ms. Staveley's bid is a combination of her own equity and money from investors, some of which are based in the Middle East.

Current owner Mike Ashley wants to have a deal for the club completed by Christmas, with the Sports Direct tycoon putting the Magpies up for sale last month, having endured a difficult relationship with the club's fans since taking over in 2008 after purchasing the club for £240 million.

It is believed, should Ms Staveley's takeover be successful, that a significant amount of money would be handed to manager Rafa Benitez to bolster his squad in the January transfer window, with the Spanish coach not being sufficiently backed by Ashley over the summer, following the club's return to the Premier League after a season in the Championship.
