Surprise Name Emerges In Newcastle United's Managerial Hunt, Would 'Accept' Short-Term Deal

While building for the future is part of the new owner's vision for the club, more pressing concerns could decide who they hire.

AC Milan legend Gennaro Gattuso could be the man to lead Newcastle United into a new era, as reports are linking the Italian with the newly vacant managerial role at the club.

After managing both Milan and Napoli, the 43-year-old is seemingly on the lookout for a new challenge - and Newcastle could be the perfect landing spot.

In a recent airing of Italian football show Il Processo, journalist Fabio Santini speculated that Gattuso would be interested in taking the job - so long as it was on a short-term contract.

The former midfielder left Napoli at the end of last season and has been searching for a new job ever since.

This summer, Gattuso was involved in a bizarre scandal after he accepted the Fiorentina job, only for him and the club to renege on the proposed deal two weeks before he was due to begin.

With this in mind, Newcastle United would represent an ideal opportunity for the manager, as if he can steer the club clear of relegation this season, he'll go some way towards partially rebuilding his reputation as a coach.

"Attention, there is a sensational twist for what concerns Gennaro Gattuso. The coach could land in the Premier League, at Newcastle," Santini stated on the show (via Area Napoli).

"The Calabrian coach would also accept a fixed-term contract until the end of the current football season."

Santini's comments don't make it clear whether Newcastle are actually interested in Gattuso, but if they are, he suggests that the coach would be willing to negotiate a deal.

As things stand, there isn't any evidence to suggest that Newcastle are preparing to make the World Cup winner a contractual offer.

In recent days, another former Serie A manager has been widely tipped to take over at St James' Park - that being Paulo Fonseca.

The former Roma and Porto boss is the bookies favourite at the minute, with the Magpies in desperate need of a coach to help fend off relegation from the Premier League this season - as they currently sit in 19th.
