Newcastle United fans have voiced their concern after a story emerged that the club would be willing to sign Jesse Lingard and make him their highest-paid player.

An article from HITC revealed a report made by Ian McGarry that Newcastle would be willing to offer the Manchester United midfielder an astonishing £200,000 a week.

"It is our understanding at the Transfer Window Podcast, that Lingard, who turns 29 next week, may well get a nice birthday present from Newcastle's new owners in that they are willing to compensate him leaving Man United and making it a hat-trick for United's that he's played for after his loan spell at West Ham, and giving him £200,000 a week in order to make that switch," McGarry said.

But Magpies' fans are not too thrilled by the prospect of signing the England international, which would smash their current wage structure.

It has led to calls that Newcastle are "throwing away money", while another fan cited the division it would cause in the squad, as Lingard would earn more than double the current highest-paid earners at the club.

Lingard has endured a frustrating campaign with Man United so far this season, and is yet to make the starting line-up in the Premier League.

In total, he has made 12 appearances across all competitions and scored two goals, which came in the 4-1 and 2-1 wins over Newcastle and West Ham United respectively.

There was also strong speculation linking him with a return back to the Hammers after enjoying a successful loan spell in east London last season.

The 28-year-old scored nine goals in 16 appearances, as David Moyes' side finished sixth and secured Europa League qualification.

It will be fascinating to see if Lingard arrives on Tyneside, in what is set to be an eventful January transfer window for the club. A host of big names have been linked with a move to the north east, which includes the likes of Kieran Trippier, Thibaut Courtois and Dusan Vlahovic.
