Matt Doherty might be on the verge of becoming a Tottenham player but his old tweets would suggest he had a love for Arsenal.

The Republic of Ireland international is poised to join in a Β£16 million move from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the final details of the transfer being thrashed out according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Joining Spurs and playing under Jose Mourinho would be a great move for a player who was signed by Wolves for Β£75,000 in 2010 after impressing in a pre-season game playing for Bohemians, but the 28-year-old's old tweets appear to show he was a boyhood gooner.

A tweet from eight years ago saw Doherty, who was on loan at Bury at the time, declare his love for the North London outfit he is now set to call his rivals.

Another from September 7 2013 saw him write: "Yes I'm a HUGE Arsenal fan!", while he also put "Ozil" with a love-heart as he showed his appreciation for the German playmaker.

There's also another instance where he referred to the Gunners as "us" as he gave his thoughts on a 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

"Man I love Arsenal and btw [Karl] Jenkinson is quick but Gervinho could of won it for us at the end but take the point tho [sic]," the Irishman wrote on Twitter.

Spurs players having a fondness for Arsenal isn't exactly a new thing though. It's pretty common knowledge that talisman Harry Kane supported them as a kid, while Moussa Sissoko and Serge Aurier have both been pictured with Arsenal shirts.

Should Doherty join as expected, he will become Spurs' second summer signing after the capture of Southampton skipper Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Reports say Wolves will look to fill the void left by Doherty with Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
