Nemanja Matic Names Manchester United's Most Important Player

Hard to argue with his choice

Nemanja Matic has had his say on who Manchester United's most important player is and it's hard to argue with the Serbian midfielder's choice.

Matic himself has already established himself as one of Jose Mourinho's most vital players since his £40 million move from Chelsea this summer, becoming an immediate fan favourite at Old Trafford.

But it is the Serb's midfield partner Paul Pogba who Matic believes is most important to United's aspirations, this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Matic said, "He's a very important player for us, he always brings some extra quality to our team.

"So of course we miss him, but we also have some very important players to substitute him.

"Obviously when he comes back, for sure we are going to be stronger because as you know he has a lot of quality and he is very important to the club."

Pogba, who became the world's most expensive player when he returned to Old Trafford from Juventus in an £89 million deal in 2016, was coming into his own at the beginning of the current campaign before a hamstring injury during a Champions League group game against Basel derailed his season, sidelining the French midfielder for two months.

In his absence, United still managed to win the majority of their games, but without the same vibrancy in attack that they had with Pogba marauding forward and supporting the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku.

Once Pogba returned from injury, his presence notably lifted Jose Mourinho's team, as they comfortably beat Newcastle United 4-1 at Old Trafford and produced a ruthlessly efficient 3-1 victory over Arsenal, with Pogba laying on two assists before being sent off for a clumsy challenge on Hector Bellerin.

Once again, the former Juventus man's absence has highlighted just how much United miss him, with a limp 2-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City followed up by a narrow, forgettable 1-0 home victory over Bournemouth.

Do you agree with Matic's claim about Pogba's importance or are there other players who are more important to any potential success the Red Devils might enjoy this season?
