Much to the dismay of plenty of Arsenal supporters, Shkodran Mustafi was captain for the Gunners' first pre-season game last night and he didn't even know how to wear the armband properly.

A youthful Arsenal beat MLS side Colorado Rapids 3-0, with goals coming from Bukayo Saka, James Olayinka and Gabriel Martinelli in the Stateside friendly.

And with club captain Laurent Koscielny refusing to make the trip across the pond as he wants Arsenal to allow him to return to France, Mustafi assumed the armband for part of the fixture.

The fact Unai Emery handed him the captaincy annoyed Gunners' fans and their frustrations were summed up when he wore the armband upside down by mistake.

The German defender has failed to win over Arsenal fans since joining from Valencia in a ยฃ35 million 2016 - so much so that there was a petition for him to receive lifetime imprisonment earlier this year when he was at fault for two goals against Crystal Palace.

'Gene. N' set it up on Change.Org and it garnered over 1700 signatures.

The description read: "A man by the name of Shkodran Mustafi has been fooling a football club into paying him over ยฃ90,000 for broadcasting very disturbing content hidden in football matches.

"He is single-handedly responsible for millions of dollars of broken appliances like televisions and mobile devices, and there have been some cases of suicides related to him. There MUST be an investigation into the matter. I have been affected massively by this fiasco, and I really couldn't find any other solution."

Meanwhile, Emery says he has spoken to Koscielny, who wants Arsenal to terminate his contract so he can return to his native France.

"I spoke with him three times for his situation. We wanted him to come with us but he decided to stay. Now it is a matter for the club," Emery said, as per the Daily Star.

"He has one year more contract with us. For me he's an important player. Now it's one matter for him and the club. The club and him need to speak and they are speaking about his situation. I cannot say more than that."
