Jose Mourinho has given hope to all Bastian Schweinsteiger lovers out there.

The Manchester United manager hasn't used the German midfielder much so far this season, initially freezing him out after arriving at Old Trafford before bringing him back into the first team fold in November.

But he's still only made one top team appearance this term, coming on as a late substitute in the EFL Cup win over West Ham last year.

Given it's the January transfer window, Schweinsteiger's future at Old Trafford is back in doubt as he looks for the first team football he needs at this stage of his career.

And it might actually come at United, with Mourinho stating that the 32-year-old former Germany international could be in line to start a game soon and is more likely to stay at the club this month.

Speaking at his press conference earlier, Mourinho, per mirror.co.uk, said: "He's selected again, so he can start, he can be on the bench, but he's an option for us. I think that's the best way to describe [him]; for many months he wasn't an option, we made that decision. Since then, he's been working very well and never an injury - he was ill last week, but never an injury. His body is fine, he's training very well, he's ready."

United go up against Reading in the FA Cup tomorrow afternoon and that could be the game where Schweinsteiger makes his starting return for the team.

He's made 32 appearances for the club since signing from Bayern Munich in 2015 and appears determined to improve that number before eventually leaving England when his time at United is up.
