Richards broke through at Manchester City as a teenager and quickly established himself as a regular in defence.
He was handed a lucrative £50,000-per-week contract before turning 20 and he's admitted he enjoyed that wealth a little bit too much.
The 33-year-old told Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer on their Match of the Day Top 10 podcast: "I was given a bit too much too soon, so you just down tools a little bit.
How much?!@MicahRichards was handed a MEGA weekly wage when he was just 19 :money_with_wings:- Match of the Day (@BBCMOTD) December 6, 2021
Micah, @GaryLineker and @alanshearer discuss football's top teenagers on the new #MOTDTop10 podcast from @BBCSounds :calling::point_down:
"And I am not afraid to say because you know the papers will document it. I went from £5,000 a week to £50,000 a week. From 18 to 19! That's what I mean!
"So I'm on £2.5 million a year. This is in the late 2000's. I went from £500 to £5,000 a week and it was fully deserved at the time."
It's rare to hear an ex-pro open up in this way but in the case of Richards, tying him down made a lot of sense.
He was chased by a number of clubs at the time and City weren't the global superpower they are today.
Richards also received a call-up to the England team after just 26 appearances for City at a professional level.
The Premier League winner went on to admit he invested in property at a young age to make sure he was set up after retirement.
However, one night in Los Angeles saw Richards become 'the man around the town' and shell out an obscene amount of money... which cracked his two co-hosts up.
"(With) £50,000 a week it was more because I was an asset, so if they wanted to sell me...' Richards continued.
"I didn't spent money and waste it because I've got loads of property.
"It was different because you're going out and you're buying everyone, you want to be the man, the man around the town.
"I went to LA one time and honestly in one night we spent $150,000! Honestly, on just drink and having a good time."
Richards won the FA Cup and Premier League with City before going on loan to Fiorentina in 2014.
He left the club permanently for Aston Villa in 2015 and has since retired to become a pundit for CBS, BBC and Sky.
It's on Sky where he is most loved, thanks to his incredible friendship with Roy Keane.
