Mesut Ozil could be in line for a surprise switch to the MLS.

Steven Goff from the Washington Post is reporting that there is interest from D.C United, who will hold a meeting with one of Ozil's representatives in the capital at some point this week.

They have also been linked with enigmatic striker Mario Balotelli, who is currently out of contract after leaving Marseille.

The news comes after D.C confirmed the departure of talisman Wayne Rooney to Derby County in a player-coach role, with England's record goalscorer joining up in January 2020 once the MLS season has finished.

Rooney, who has been a revelation across the pond after joining D.C in June last year, has signed a 18-month contract at Pride Park after some incredibly quick developments.

The 33-year-old continues to be a key player for Ben Olsen's side, scoring 11 goals and registering seven assists this season.

Rooney will leave a gaping hole at the Audi Field but the potential addition of Ozil is one that is seriously exciting and would help soften the blow.
