Mesut Ozil's promise to his mother may well be the deciding factor in his next career move.

Out of favour at Arsenal, it was reported last night that the World Cup winner was in advanced negotiations with MLS outfit D.C United over a lucrative move.

Much like they did with Wayne Rooney, the Washington outfit want to make him the face of the club and even offered to house Ozil's '39 Steps Coffee' brand in their Audi Field stadium as well as give him his own merchandise line.

But today there has been talk of Ozil agreeing a three-and-a-half year contract with Turkish Super Lig giants Fenerbahce, who now appear to be favourites for his signature.

And part of that is because Ozil, who is of Turkish descent and grew up in Germany, promised his mother Gulizar he would play there one day.

As per Turkish outlet Spor X, Ozil told her in 2018: "When my contract ends (with Arsenal), I will play in Fenerbahce as I promised you."

It's said that Ozil was a fan of the Istanbul outfit as a youngster and he could soon be pulling on their shirt.

Ozi, who arrived from Real Madrid in 2013, hasn't played any football since March after being completely ostracized by manager Mikel Arteta, a former teammate of his at Arsenal.

Arteta has always maintained Ozil's omission from Europa League and Premier League squads was down to footballing reasons but Ozil questioned Arsenal's loyalty in an emotional statement posted in October.

In response to news Ozil is nearing an exit from North London, staunch Gunners fan Piers Morgan has offered to give him a lift to the airport.

After the pair had a few recent run-ins, Morgan wrote on Twitter: "BOOM! Finally, some good news in 2021!

"If you need a (covid-secure) lift to the airport @MesutOzil1088, let me know."

Ozil's agent, Erkut Sogut says the player will make a decision "within the next 10 days".
