Mesut Ozil is close to leaving Arsenal, with the German reportedly in 'advanced negotiations' with MLS side D.C United.

The World Cup winner, a £42.5 million signing for the Gunners in 2013, has been completely frozen out at the Emirates Stadium.

The 32-year-old was left out of Arsenal's Premier League and Europa League squads by Mikel Arteta and spent time cheering the team on through social media while he trains on his own.

But Chris Wheatley from football.london says the former Real Madrid man is in talks with D.C over a lucrative move across the pond.

As they did with Wayne Rooney during his stint in the United States, the Washington outfit plan to make him the face of the club and have even offered to house Ozil's '39 Steps Coffee' brand in their Audi Field stadium as well as give him his own merchandise line.

Arsenal's top earner hasn't made a single appearance for the club this term, with his last outing coming back in March.

Arteta, who initially brought him back into the fold after he replaced Unai Emery, has always maintained that his call was made for footballing reasons and not because of a personal problem with Ozil.

"It was just a football decision and my conscience is very calm because I have been really fair with him," Arteta told Sky Sports.

"My level of communication with him has been high, we know what to expect with each other.

He has had the opportunities like everybody else. I'm sad that I had to leave three players out of this list but I tried to look everybody in the eye and be comfortable with it.

"With Mesut, I have this feeling because I have been very straightforward since I arrived at this club.

"It's nothing related to [Ozil's] behaviour. It's my decision."

Ozil has made 254 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 44 goals and winning three FA Cups.
