Lionel Messi has been as sharp as ever after returning to action and was his usual self again last night as Barcelona won 2-0 away at Leganes.

After wonderkid Ansu Fati put Barca ahead, the Blaugrana skipper went on an archetypal Messi run that led to a penalty he scored in the second half and it was just breathtaking to watch.

Messi picked up the ball on the halfway line and promptly danced in and out of a number of Leganes players before he tried to play a one-two with Luis Suarez was fouled inside the box by Jonathan Silva.

The balance and close control in such tight and congested areas was just outrageous once again. The ball was almost glued to his left foot, with nobody able to stop him despite several attempts to bring him down.

Messi put away the penalty for his 21st goal in La Liga this season, while he's now just one goal away from reaching a sensational total of 700 in his glittering career.

With 12 games remaining, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner looks good value to finish top scorer in the Spanish top flight for a record seventh time and he could also knock Brazilian legend Pele off his perch in the coming weeks.

Having scored 629 goals in all competitions for Barcelona, the Argentine talisman is only 14 away from surpassing Pele and his record of 643 goals for Santos - which is currently the most goals scored by a player for a single club.
