Given his irresistible form of late, Lionel Messi could well be on course to move ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Ballon d'Or rankings.
After Ronaldo scooped the 2016 and 2017 gongs, the latter award coming after he was front and centre in Real Madrid's double-winning campaign last term, the two footballing titans are tied on five.
After winning the precious individual prize five times, you'd think Messi would have the taste for it. However, unlike Ronaldo, who is very vocal about his desire to win the Ballon d'Or, Messi insists who's more concentrated on winning honours with Barcelona.

"I've already said my objective is not individual prizes but to get all the trophies available,' he told reporters at an event in Barcelona, via the Daily Mail.
"Hopefully, we will finish [the season] in the best way. I think we're on the right track.
"Luckily, things are going well. I'm happy with how things are going, although there's still a long way to go. It's the same [goal] as every season: to try to win everything."
Messi has 27 goals in all competitions this season, compared to Ronaldo's 17 - with the Portuguese superstar scoring more goals in the Champions League than he has in La Liga.
The Argentine ace scored Barcelona's 4000th goal at the Nou Camp in the Copa Del Rey quarter final second leg victory over Catalan rivals Espanyol, and remarkably, despite only playing 14 years at the ground, he has scored 7.7 per cent of Barca's goal on their home patch.
Moreover, if you throw his Nou Camp assists in the mix, his goal contribution percentage rises to 10 per cent, which is simply sensational.
