Lionel Messi is getting ready to embark on his venture in fashion (yes, seriously) this summer after it has emerged that he will launch his own apparel collection.

The 31-year-old Barcelona captain will follow in the same footsteps as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimović when it comes to dabbling in fashion.

According to Women's Wear Daily, Messi will be collaborating with Ginny Hilfiger on the project.

Ginny is the sister of MGO artistic director Tommy Hilfiger and has said that the brand would include a "sporty edge," focusing mainly on men's wear and also including women's tops as well.

The venture will begin in July with the launch of an e-commerce site called 'The Messi Store,' with WWD reporting that a full rollout would start in August.

According to Hilfiger, there will be some customers that might be lucky enough to receive a special surprise, saying that there are some items that will include an autograph from the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

The collaboration between Messi and Hilfiger came about through MGO chief executive officer Maximiliano Ojeda, who has followed the sport closely and shares the same nationality as the Argentina captain.

"Leo is the greatest football player in the world and still has a lot of years left to play," Hilfiger told WWD.

"Also, he is recognised globally by all types of people even people who don't watch football."

She also praised Messi for being a "really humble, generous and kind person and a great role model."

"He has been involved since we started talking to the Messi family two-and-a-half years ago when we presented the idea to them," she continued.

"His sister, who he is very close to, is part of our team as a liaison helping us know what he likes and doesn't like and working with us in Argentina and Barcelona. She will be working with us in New York, too."

Messi will be hoping for Barcelona to win the Copa del Rey on Saturday when they play against Valencia.

The Argentine ace has had a brilliant season, finding the back of the net 36 times in La Liga and scoring more than 50 times for the sixth time in a season.

Will Barcelona beat Valencia in the Copa del Rey?
