'God of Football' is a pretty apt nickname for Lionel Messi.

The Camp Nou faithful were worshiping their captain as he produced a masterful performance against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Messi scored not one but two goals including a stunning free-kick to record his 600th career goal for Barcelona.

Football fans and pundits alike watched in amazement as the 31-year-old superstar ran the show.

Rio Ferdinand said he was "blessed" to be inside the ground to witness his sublime showing. Gary Lineker paid tribute to the Argentine maestro on social media.

Not to mention ex-Real Madrid and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho who also waxed lyrical about Messi.

'The Special One' has created a new nickname for Messi; 'God of Football'.

"Liverpool was brave in the approach," Mourinho said. "I don't think in the past 20 years many teams in the Champions League beat Barcelona in ball possession in the Champions League.

"God of Football made it completely different. Of course (Barca) have a good team, phenomenal players, but that player is absolutely incredible."

That's a nickname we can get behind.

Messi was at the heart of Barcelona's destruction over Liverpool, pulling the strings in the attacking third with Jurgen Klopp bowing down to the little genius.

"In these moments he is unstoppable," Klopp said after his side's 3-0 defeat. "We couldn't defend the free kick. What a strike.

"The second goal was probably not the nicest in the career of Lionel Messi, but it shows his skills that he is even there in that moment.

"Apart from that I was happy in how we defended the whole Barcelona team. I am a big admirer of them, as is everybody, but my boys didn't show too much respect, they were there every time."

Barcelona are destined to reach the Champions League final with their three-goal advantage.
