Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi has revealed he was genuinely contemplating retirement from football after he was part of the PSG side that lost 6-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League.

Unai Emery's side blitzed the Blaugrana 4-0 at the Parc des Princes in the first leg and it looked like they had one foot in the quarter finals going into the game at the Nou Camp.

But even with Edinson Cavani scoring an away goal, the French side completely fell apart at the Nou Camp in the second leg and conceded a last-gasp goal from Sergi Roberto in the 95th minute to end up on the wrong side of the greatest ever comeback in Champions League history.

For Matuidi, who was playing in midfield, the defeat was so mentally damaging that he thought about calling it quits.

"I legit was going to retire from football in 2017," Matuidi told RMC Sport, as quoted by SPORT.

"The reason? It was because of Barcelona. After that 6-1, at the Camp Nou, I was severely sad. I said to myself I should stop playing football and hang up my boots. But now I'm better at Juve and only remember good memories of PSG."

The 27-year old made the switch to Juventus in a €25 million the following summer after the Champions League heartbreak and he's now desperate to win Europe's premier club competition.

"Coming to Juve was a step forward, a logical choice to further my career. All this without offending PSG. It's a great club, but I feel this team is particularly suited to me.

"Here there is everything to allow me do my best. At Juve I can have I can have the ambition to win the Champions League," the Frenchman added.
