In what is undoubtedly going to be a long, long summer packed with transfer news and rumours, there's another one to add to the collection, and it concerns Manchester United.

The mysterious Sky sources are saying that United are interesting in signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane this summer.

In recent transfer windows, United's interest in the Frenchman has been heavily reported and it seems as though those links just won't go away.

A new central defender has been earmarked as a priority signing for United this summer, with Jose Mourinho eager to land a top-tier partner for Eric Bailly in the heart of his defence, particularly with Champions League football to play next season.

Mourinho signed Varane for Real Madrid in 2011, and the centre-back excelled under the Portuguese.

A reunion with Mourinho at United isn't out of the question, though it would be a surprise to see Varane move considering fellow centre-back Pepe is widely expected to leave the Bernabeu this summer.

Plenty of fans weren't particularly confident of a deal for Varane happening, going off the replies to Sky Sports:

Meanwhile there has been talk from Portugal that United are closing in on the £35 million signing of Benfica defender Victor Lindelof. The Swedish defender was said to be on his way to Old Trafford in the January transfer window but a deal never materialised.

More to follow.
