Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær should make a shock move for free agent Gary Cahill this summer.

The veteran defender, 33, spent seven years at Chelsea and left Stamford Bridge after his contract expired at the end of the season.

But former Southampton and Leicester City player David Connolly, 42, believes that United could do with a 'terrific' player like Cahill.

"There are deals out there. [Toby] Alderweireld is available for £25million and Gary Cahill has just gone on a free," the ex-Republic of Ireland striker told talkSPORT.

"Now, what harm would it be to take a Gary Cahill, with all his experience and winners' medals, into the building? It's that experience, you might have lost a lot, well get someone in that would give that!

"Look, he's not going to bring the ball out from the back like if they had a Harry Maguire. But he's a top, top centre-half who looks as fit as a flea.

"Obviously he hasn't played that much, but he looks after himself. So why not someone like that?

"Under Sir Alex [Ferguson], he would always make an ageing, loanee signing, a Henrik Larsson or they had [Zlatan] Ibrahimović [under José Mourinho], for example.

"Someone like that at the back would do terrifically for them."

The Chelsea centre-back enjoyed a successful career at the Blues and was named in the PFA Team of the Year in three separate seasons.

He exited Stamford Bridge after winning two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, one EFL Cup, a Champions League and two Europa Leagues.

Solskjær, 46, has been busy in the transfer window as he overhauls United's squad.

The Red Devils endured a disappointing season and the Norwegian manager found United's defensive woes to be a handful.

United have been linked with a move for Leicester's Harry Maguire, who is also a target for Manchester City, and launched an improved £70m offer for him on Tuesday.

But the Foxes turned down the offer and are holding out for a world-record fee for a defender.

Solskjær has already bolstered his full-back options with the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for £50m.
