Manchester United are preparing to hijack Manchester City's move for Harry Maguire after lodging an improved bid of £70m, according to Sky Sports.

The England centre-back, 26, has been linked with both Manchester clubs this summer and the Foxes are keen to hold out for £100m.

And Maguire hasn't returned for Leicester City's pre-season training on Monday after being on international duty with the Three Lions.

Brendan Rodgers' side will be heading to Évian-les-Bains in the French Alps on Sunday for six days of training.

But it is unknown if the Leicester defender will return in time as both Manchester clubs are vying for his signature.

United and City have been in talks with Leicester over Maguire, but they have been unable to push through a deal.

Maguire was frequently linked with United last summer, but he remained at Leicester and signed a five-year deal last year.

While the Foxes might be holding out for £100m, they would be willing to consider offers that exceed £75m.

And any offer above £75m accepted would make Maguire the most expensive defender in the world, eclipsing the fee that Liverpool splashed out for Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in 2018.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær wants to add Maguire to his ranks as he attempts to bolster his defensive options for the new season.

The Norwegian, 46, secured his second summer signing in the form of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was snapped up for £50m from Crystal Palace.

But Maguire has also been a major target for Pep Guardiola following the departure of ex-City captain Vincent Kompany.

Nicolás Otamendi is expected to leave the club and make the move to Atlético Madrid this summer.

And the Argentine defender's departure would allow the City boss, 48, to make Maguire one of his first-choice centre-backs alongside Aymeric Laporte and John Stones.

Should Maguire leave Leicester? If so, should he move to United or City?
