Manchester United have made a shock move for David Neres by launching a stunning £46m bid, according to reports.

The Brazilian winger, 22, had a superb season for the Dutch champions both in their domestic league and in the Champions League.

And ESPN Brazil reporter Jorge Nicola said in his blog for Yahoo! that the Red Devils have turned their attention to Neres in the hopes of landing him before the transfer window closes.

Ajax tied down the highly rated winger down to a new deal in 2018 and will demand a high fee for the player, whose contract with the club will expire in 2022.

According to Nicola, Ajax would hold out for a whopping £64m for Neres as the player's former club, Sao Paulo, would receive 23 per cent from the value of the sale.

The Dutch champions have already lost Frenkie de Jong to Barcelona and Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus after their superb season.

And Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, 49, wants to keep hold of Neres in the hopes of challenging for the Champions League next season.

United missed out on Juventus star Paulo Dybala after they pulled the plug on the whole transfer saga.

But Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would want to add Neres to his frontline with uncertainty surrounding the future of Romelu Lukaku, who has been linked with Inter Milan and Juventus this summer.

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars admitted last month that the club had received an offer from Atletico Madrid for Neres.

"He has received an offer from Atlético Madrid. We'll discuss that with him over the next few days but our intention is that he remains at Ajax next season," he told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad.

"He had the chance to move to China during the winter transfer window but we wouldn't allow him to leave.

"Look at how it turned out -- that was a good decision for Ajax, and for him.

"Now he's an international with Brazil. Neres' progress is all down to Ajax, the team and of course the coach, Erik ten Hag.

"He can play an important role for the team but I'm sure he might see things differently."

Should Neres leave Ajax for United?
