Manchester United could make a shock move for free agent Fernando Llorente before the transfer window shuts, according to reports in Italy.

The Spanish striker, 34, most recently played for Tottenham Hotspur and is now on the hunt for a new club.

Sky Sport Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio claims that the Red Devils could snap up the former Spurs striker as a potential replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who has been linked with Juventus and Inter Milan.

The Belgian striker, 26, has been training with Belgian side Anderlecht as his move to Italy has failed to materialise so far.

The transfer window will shut after 8th August for English teams, but United want Llorente as a backup option should they sell Lukaku to one of the Italian clubs in the coming weeks.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, 46, is keen to add another forward to his attacking options ahead of the new season.

The Red Devils were linked with a move for Juventus star Paulo Dybala, 25, in a swap deal involving Lukaku.

But United pulled the plug on the deal after they were unable to meet the Argentine forward's demands.

Solskjaer has reinforced his squad with the signings of winger Daniel James and right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

And the club completed their stunning marquee signing on Monday when they splashed out a whopping £80m for Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

United won all six of their pre-season tour matches this summer, but Solskjaer has admitted that his side must start their season well to ensure their hard work isn't undone.

"We've been very pleased with it. It's been nice seeing the boys come back to pre-season in good shape," the United boss told talkSPORT.

"But then again, no points have been handed out, and it doesn't really matter when Chelsea come to Old Trafford on 11 August.

"We need to improve and we need to be better. The more we improve and the more we get better, the bigger the chance we can challenge for trophies at the end of the season.

"These boys have shown their capabilities. If we just stay level-headed, I can see us improving a lot."

United host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday for their first league match of the season.
