Real Madrid Should Sign Paul Pogba Over Neymar, Says Former Club President

Former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón believes that the club should focus on a move for Paul Pogba over Neymar.

The Manchester United midfielder and the Paris Saint-Germain star have both been linked with the reigning Champions League holders, with the Spanish club expected to spend heavily in the summer.

While the 68-year-old Spanish lawyer praised Neymar, he said that he would pick the 26-year-old World Cup-winning Frenchman as his key signing out of the two.

"Neymar is a top player but I don't see him -- his behaviour in the last games he has played -- as being the best reference for coming to Real Madrid," he told Sky Sports.

"Pogba? Maybe. He is one of the players that [Zinedine] Zidane has said he really likes.

"It would be a problem of money. Our president [Florentino Pérez] has decided to invest a ridiculous amount of money in the new stadium because we already have a fantastic stadium."

Los Blancos have already completed their acquisition of Éder Militão from Porto in March, signing him up on a six-year deal for a fee of £43.5m (€50m).

Zizou is expected to reinforce his attacking options in the transfer window and Eden Hazard is one of the club's biggest targets, with the Chelsea ace admitting after the Europa League final that he would most likely leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Gareth Bale, on the other hand, could be set to leave Madrid in the summer and has been linked with the likes of United, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich.

While the 29-year-old Welsh winger's future remains uncertain, Calderón admitted that he is disappointed with what is happening to him at the club.

"It's a pity what is happening with Gareth Bale. I like him," he explained.

"He came here with the great handicap that we paid for him more money than we did for Cristiano [Ronaldo].

"It's not fair but fans think that he will be scoring more goals than Cristiano, playing better, helping the team much more than Cristiano. That's impossible.

"They have perceived some lack of commitment. He doesn't speak Spanish so he couldn't communicate.

"Maybe that's the best destination for him, a loan to a British club, and try to recover the confidence and try to again be the player that he has been for the last 10 years."
