There was, to say the least, a sense of mild apprehension among Chelsea fans last summer when the club announced that they had resigned David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain. Fast forward almost a year, however, and the Brazilian is now seen as less of a liability and more of an integral part of Antonio Conte's Premier League champions.

Luiz originally left Stamford Bridge in 2014, joining PSG in a £50m deal. When he made the return trip to Chelsea just under a year ago, not many Blues fans were convinced that it was necessarily the best way to spend £32 million.

The Brazilian, however, has transformed many people's opinions of him with a series of assured performances at the heart of Conte's three man defence. There was still the occasional mistakes and lapses in concentration but, for the most part, Luiz was one of the Premier League's best defenders, last season.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Luiz spoke of his first interaction with Conte upon arriving back in London.

"Conte is a great person, a great character and he's passionate - he loves football.

"The day I arrived here we talked together and he tried to explain his philosophy to play football.

"He said to me: 'You are the player I want in my team and to improve my team. And then I said to him: 'I'm going to work hard for you and for the team'. And that's it"

Luiz played in 32 of Chelsea's 38 league matches, last season, helping the Blues to their second league title in three years while also being one of the main reasons Conte's team shipped just 33 goals en route to lifting their fifth Premier League crown.

The 30-year-old centre-half will be hoping he and his teammates can add the FA Cup to their trophy cabinet, this Saturday as they take on Arsenal in the final at Wembley. Luiz missed the Blues' last triumph in the competition due to a hamstring injury.
