Louis Van Gaal's Comments About 'Boring' Man United Are Pretty Amazing

Nothing but respect for the audacity of these comments

Louis Van Gaal's two seasons in charge of Manchester United are perhaps best remembered for the Dutchman offering a room full of reporters mince pies and wine, calling one journalist 'fat man', thinking Chris Smalling was called Mike and his 'philosophy'.

The 'philosophy' saw United score about four times in two years as the Red Devils bored their fans and their opposition into submission, winning an FA Cup along the way, before Van Gaal was fired in 2016 and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

And it's obviously a decision that still rankles the former United boss, who ripped into his former club following their derby day defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford, yesterday. Speaking to the Mirror, Van Gaal said, "I would rather watch City play than United.

"You need quality in a squad and it's clear City have a better squad.

"If you ask me how did I do at United, I will say it was my best year ever, given the circumstances I was working under.

"We played football that was quite alright. But it's not football that is appreciated in England. And yet, right now, looking at United, I have to conclude Mourinho is not being criticised while it's far more boring football.

"What United produce now is defensive football. I always played attacking football. The proof is that the opposition were always parking the bus.

"They don't do that now because Jose Mourinho plays so defensive."

Nothing but respect for the audacity of these comments.

But the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager claimed that he doesn't feel any resentment to his former Barca assistant Mourinho, but he does have a problem with United chief executive Ed Woodward.

"He [Mourinho] is not an awful man. In fact, I think he is a sympathetic guy. He was my assistant at Barcelona.

"I worked with him and what Mourinho did [taking his job] is what often happens in football.

"I have more problems with the CEO, Ed Woodward. He never discussed anything with me - and you can talk about anything with me.

"With all my experience, I know the unwritten laws of football. A club has to prepare for the future.

"I can understand that and they should have approached me. Ed could talk to me but he did not."

Spectacular. Absolutely spectacular. Can we have Louis Van Gaal back in the UK as a pundit, just mercilessly ripping into people for being boring or defensive without any sense of irony whatsoever?
