European Champions Liverpool Lose To Napoli After Controversial Penalty

Reigning European champions Liverpool were beaten by Napoli on Matchday one in the Champions League group stage following a controversial penalty call at the San Paolo.
Late on in Naples Jose Callejon went down under the challenge from Andy Robertson and though it looked clumsy at first glance, replays showed that there was barely, if any, contact from the Scotsman.
This could be a big moment in Group E... :eyes:

Jose Callejon wins a penalty, Dries Mertens dispatches it to put Napoli 1-0 up.
Harsh? Or correct call? pic.twitter.com/pWuhrzJL0b
VAR looked at the decision but did not overrule Felix Brych and Dries Mertens converted from 12 yards despite Adrian guessing right and getting a hand to his effort.

Liverpool fans on social media were furious at the decision:
FT: Napoli 2-0 Liverpool. Defeated by a penalty that should never have been. Shame we didn't have VAR to correct such a clear and obvious wrong decision....oh wait. Poor performance though. Still, we were beaten here last season and look what happened... #LFC #NAPLIV #UCL pic.twitter.com/hfKQAOTSw4

Salah draws contact multiple times in the box, doesn't fall, nobody checks to call a penalty. Napoli gets one chance to dive in the box, they take it, penalty stands, they go on to win the match.

Right.
A rare mistake from Virgil van Dijk late on in stoppage time gifted substitute Fernando Llorente Napoli's second to hand the Reds a losing start in this season's Champions League and a second consecutive defeat away at tonight's opponents.
