Liverpool have a managerial void in their under-18 ranks following Steven Gerrard's appointment as Ranger's manager.

But while one Anfield legend departs, another could very well be replacing his services.

On Friday, Rangers finally put the rampant rumours to rest by announcing Gerrard as their new manager on a four-year deal.

And it appears Liverpool will lure one of their former players to head the position in the shape of Robbie Fowler.

Liverpool Echo's James Pearce has reported that Fowler is a 'strong contender' to take over Gerrard at the clubs under-18 level.

Fowler, affectionately known as 'God', is a Liverpool hero for his goal-scoring brilliance.

After graduating from the youth academy, the lethal-marksman eventually broke into the first team, spending eights years at the club.

He left for Leeds United, yet returned to his boyhood club in 2006 for one season.

Meanwhile, Gerrard takes his first plunge into management and he's delighted with his new job.

"I'm delighted and obviously very proud. It is a big, big honour, not just for me but for my family as well, and I am really looking forward to getting my teeth into this job," he said in a press conference via Rangers.

"This is right up there. I am well aware of the history and the tradition of this football club. I know the size and I know what the supporters are all about."

Gerrard added: "This is up there alongside all my biggest achievements. When they do, it is important you grab them and give them everything you have got.

"I love a big challenge and I loved a big challenge as a player. A big challenge always excited me and gets the juices flowing, and this is certainly one of them.

"I'm looking forward to it very much and I can't wait until June 1 to get started. I'm not afraid to face risk head-on and to confront it. I think it is good in life sometimes to take challenges on, and if there is a certain level of risk involved, then that's fine."

How will Gerrard fare at Ibrox?
