Liverpool Defenders Have Contributed To 38 Goals This Season

Liverpool's attack has fired on all cylinders but so too has their defence...

Liverpool's deadly attack has rightly received plaudits for doing the absolute business this season but their defence has also contributed hugely to their goals.

After Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring and Trent Alexander-Arnold set up two goals in the dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle United, Liverpool's backline now has a total of 38 goals and assists in all competitions.

Alexander-Arnold has just the one goal but now boasts an incredible 13 assists - the same as his fellow full-back Andy Robertson - who hasn't found the net this term but deservedly made the PFA Team of the Year thanks to his sensational form.

Only Christian Eriksen (12), Ryan Fraser (14) and Eden Hazard (15) have more assists than the Reds' duo in the Premier League.

PFA Player of the Year Van Dijk has six goals and four assists to go with the various clean sheets he has helped keep, while his centre-back partner Joel Matip has scored one goal.

What's most interesting, however, is the fact that Liverpool's defence have more goal contributions than five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 37 (26 goals and 11 assists) in his debut season in Italy after his £99 million move to Juventus from Real Madrid.

24 clean sheets and 38 goal contributions in all competitions from the defence is very good going but it won't mean much if Liverpool don't end the season with silverware.
