Lionel Messi reportedly wants to join Manchester City this summer but it was another English side who were his team of choice on FIFA.

According to Pablo Zabaleta, Messi would regularly play as Chelsea on the EA Sports football game when they played against one another.

The pair of Argentines both lived in Barcelona at the same time when Zabaleta was playing at Catalan rivals Espanyol, prior to making his name as a fan favourite at City.

And they would regularly lock horns on the PlayStation as well as on derby day - with Zabaleta claiming that Chelsea were Messi's go-to team.

"I was better at PlayStation than Messi," Zabaleta told the BBC while providing punditry on the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

"He used to play with Chelsea a lot. I used to live in Barcelona city and he was living 30 minutes outside. We were playing on the internet."

Messi might have had some fun playing with Chelsea on FIFA, he struggled against the time for a very long time - failing to score against them in 730 minutes of Champions League action in fact.

However, he did break the duck in stunning fashion in their last 16 encounter in 2018, netting the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge before bagging a brace in a 3-0 win in the second leg at the Nou Camp.

The wantaway Barcelona skipper is prone to a bit of FIFA, with Sergio Aguero, his long-time close friend and compatriot ordering him a special Gamecase, a durable ABS case with a TV and built-in gaming monitor, so that he could play FIFA 19 on the road.

Kai Heerings, who used to play in the Eredivisie but has experienced success with this venture, received a phone call from regular gamer and streamer Aguero, before Messi's name ended up on his bank statement.

He told SPORTbible: "Aguero called for two custom ones, and last year he wanted the new model for himself and one for Messi. It was really cool seeing the money transfer state 'L. Messi'!"
