Lionel Messi is officially the most decorated player ever to pull on the blue and red of FC Barcelona after last night's Spanish Super Cup triumph.

Over in Morocco, Ernesto Valverde's side came from behind to beat Sevilla thanks to goals from Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele, who scored an absolute belter with his right foot to secure the win in the 78th minute after an assist from Messi.

And it means that Messi, who has just been appointed captain for the new season, lifted Spanish equivalent of the Community Shield for the seventh time but it was of course extra special because it was his first as skipper.

Incredibly, the victory also scored the five-time Ballon d'Or winner his 33rd trophy in Blaugrana colours, moving him one ahead of the man he replaced as captain, Andres Iniesta - when it comes to the amount of silverware.

The Argentine genius has more trophies than years he has lived on this planet and given he shows no signs of slowing down at 31, he's almost guaranteed to have added several more to his collection by the time he rides off into the sunset.

He's also on course to become the most decorated player in club football. Ryan Giggs and Messi's former colleague Dani Alves are both on 35.
