Lionel Messi Has Scored 40+ Goals For 10 Consecutive Seasons

Silly, silly numbers...

There was a time where most strikers would settle for 20-30 goals as it was previously viewed as a fine return, yet Lionel Messi has entered a whole new stratosphere with his numbers.

Today in the Catalan derby against Espanyol, he scored a brace, including a 'Panenka' free-kick, to take his goals tally to 31 in La Liga and 41 in all competitions for Barcelona this term. He's also got 21 assists for good measure.

It's the tenth season in a row that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has reached 40 and quite frankly the numbers Messi has hit is nothing short of incredible.

He notched 47 in 2009/10, 53 the following season and then experienced the greatest individual season we've ever seen from a football when he found the net on 73 occasions in 2011/12. Utterly ridiculous.

Messi has already levelled his tally from 13/14 and 15/16, he's almost definitely going to surpass his campaign last season and he's good value to reach at least 60 for the third time in his career given the amount of games he could still feature in.

In addition to his slew of goalscoring records, the 31-year old Argentine will soon be the proud owner of the most career victories in La Liga history, with just one more needed to take him to 335 and past Iker Casillas and Ando Zubizarreta.

The day he retires will be an incredibly sad one.
