However, he was in attendance at the Estadio Nuevo Arcangel for the fixture despite being unavailable.

The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and Messi came down rom the stands to the touchline to help out Ronald Koeman and give his teammates some tactical advice.

Images of the Argentine, with his face mask on, speaking with the likes of Jordi Alba and Francisco Trincao, have been doing the rounds on social media.

Messi was on the side of the pitch supporting the Catalan outfit in the club's first penalty shoot-out since 1998.

Marc-Andre-ter Stegen saved Socidead's first two spot-kicks from Jon Bautista and Mikel Oyarzabal and after Antoine Griezmann missed, Riqui Puig was the matchwinner from 12 yards and shared a passionate embrace with Messi.

Barca will play the winner of tonight's second Spanish Super Cup semi final between Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

There is optimism that Messi will be able to play as he looks to lift a 35th trophy with Barca.

Could we see him move into management in the future. Asked in 2018 by Sport, Messi replied: "When the day arrives, we will see.

"I will find the path to follow, I will grab hold of it and we will see how everything goes. Right now I don't see myself as a manager.'
