Former Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho even admitted that he was surprised Wesley Sneijder didn't make the top three of the 2010 Ballon d'Or.

A Wesley Sneijder compilation has highlighted the Dutchman's incredible 2009-2010 season as he transformed into the 'best player in the world.'

The 36-year-old former midfielder, who retired from football in 2019, played an instrumental conductor role in Jose Mourinho's treble-winning Inter Milan side.

And Sneijder's blistering form carried over on the international stage as he fired the Netherlands into the final of the 2010 World Cup.

The ex-Inter maestro's exploits saw him land a place in the FIFA FIFPro World XI alongside Barcelona legends Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

However, one of the biggest shocks came when Sneijder was snubbed for France Football's Ballon d'Or.

Not only did the former Netherlands international receive 14.48 per cent of the votes, but he also finished outside of the top three to Iniesta, Xavi and Lionel Messi.

One fan has now compiled footage of Sneijder's world-class season to highlight how he became the 'best player in the world.'

The compilation has once again led fans to question how Sneijder was 'robbed' of the coveted Ballon d'Or award.

"If [Luka] Modric won a Ballon d'Or, then surely Sneijder should've won one for 2010," one fan wrote.

While another argued: "Sneijder won the CL [Champions League]. Was the best player in the CL. Was top scorer at the WC [World Cup]. Destroyed Brazil solo. Won the [treble]. And no Ballon d'Or?"

Someone else posted: "I also remember how he was ROBBED from winning the Ballon d'Or. He wasn't even nominated!!! SMH, but we all know he was the true winner so that's what matters."

And a fourth added: "It was a daylight robbery to not have awarded Sneijder [the Ballon d'Or]. He was the spirit of both [the] Inter and the Dutch team that season."

Mourinho, who was named FIFA World Coach of the Year in 2010, was shocked how Sneijder and Samuel Eto'o didn't crack the top three of the 2010 Ballon d'Or.

The 'Special One' told The Athletic: "It's strange that Samuel, during all his career, never managed to win the Ballon d'Or.

"Wes was amazing that season. In the same year he wins the treble, he plays the World Cup final.

"We got to the gala in 2010. The boys were not even on the top-three list. The only thing they managed to do was to be in the top XI, a player per position."
